Epilepsy

slide-banner-03Epilepsy is a neurological condition that effects the nervous system. It is characterized by electric-like disturbances which may include occasional impairment or loss of consciousness, abnormal motor phenomena, or sensory disturbances. These reactions are known as seizures. Epilepsy can also be known as “seizure disorder.”

What causes Epilepsy?

There is no one known cause of Epilepsy at this time. Nevertheless, we do know potential risk factors for seizures to occur such as an extended fever, stroke, brain tumor, infections, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), or poisoning. More information on common causes and linkages to epilepsy can be found here.

Seizures

Seizures are sudden attacks of neurological impulses in the brain causing the body to react. Seizures can be as mild as a blank stare to a violent, uncontrollable shaking of the body. Seizures vary depending on the severity of neurological impulses on the brain. When seizures happen repeatedly or there is a high tendency for additional seizures to occur, the person may be diagnosed with epilepsy. More information on seizures may be found here.

How can you prevent seizures?

The causes of seizures are unknown and are not preventable. However, avoiding the consumption of drugs and alcohol as well as taking safety precautions to avoid head injury and toxic materials during pregnancy is a preventative measure that can be taken. More information on ways to manage seizures can be foundhere.

Treatment: Seizure Management

The first step in managing epilepsy is being informed on the various methods of managing seizures. Medication is the first choice in treatment for epilepsy and is very effective in reducing the severity and frequency of seizures. Additional information on managing seizures can be found here.
